Osteoporosis: Can It Be Prevented With A Once Per Year Injection?
San Francisco Vegan Chiropractor Comments:
When it comes to osteoporosis...there are a lot of opinions...I question most of them. For one thing...osteoporosis is often times treated as if it has no cause...just a disease of the elderly...a foregone conclusion.
Well...I agree that it is very prevalent...and that the symptoms can be devastating...hip and spine fractures...but I think we have more control over the situation than most doctors do.
In my (biased) opinion...osteoporosis (in most cases) is just another degenerative disease that could probably be prevented with proper lifestyle choices. And those lifestyle choices for the most part have to do with what is on the plate at the dinner table, not an annual osteoporosis injection at the doctors office.
What we eat, the amount of exercise we get, our stress levels, alcohol/caffeine/tobacco/drugs, and everything else that makes up our context or lifestyle, all play a role in degenerative disease processes, including osteoporosis.
It is a known fact that osteoporosis can be the result of a diet rich in animal protein...the typical American diet. I have written on this previously and the person that explains this the best is Dr. John McDougall M.D.
Sure, there are many factors that can influence the amount of calcium that a person maintains in their bones, but none of them are as important as protein. The best thing to do if you are interested in learning more about the connection between high protein consumption and osteoporosis, is read this article by Dr. McDougall:
The Right Diet Will Save Your Bones
If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with osteoporosis...it's not too late to look at what you put in your mouth. I really doubt a yearly injection will be the answer :)

Prevention is obviously a very important issue, however, for women in an advanced stage of osteoporosis, getting checked for spinal fractures is an important part of maintaining long term health.
