I came across an excellent article in the Financial Times "Health" magazine insert dated 3/26/2009, page 7, entitled:
Visible Progress, Device lets blind see photos
The article talks about an amazing breakthrough at MIT that enables the blind to view pictures from a digital camera. At first the projection required a large $100,000 instrument, but now a portable version costing only $500 is being tested. It's about 5 inches square and sits on a tripod...check the story out.
