San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:
The body is like a pond, in the sense that the health of a pond (and the body) depends on the constant flow of nutrients in...and waste products out.
A pond needs to maintain a certain PH balance as does the body. Mess with the nutrients in-nutrients out flow of the pond and you will alter the PH balance and certain life forms will die off and new life forms that are not conducive to the overall health of the pond will form.
And the thing is...for the most part the pond will take care of itself...as long as we do not mess with the surroundings or alter the environment that sustains it...it's spontaneous.
Well...the same rules apply with the body...Health is spontaneous when the conditions are right.
So what are the conditions of health? Here are a few:
- What we eat
- What we drink
- How much we exercise
- The air we breath
- How much sleep we get
- The position of our spine
- How much stress we are exposed to
- The amount of sleep we get
- Our ergonomic setup at work
- Our attitudes, beliefs, and faith
- The people we associate with
- The books we read
Heck...just about every action we take steers us in the direction of health or illness. And the thing is...all of these lifestyle factors (and there are many more than what I listed) are adjustable by YOU.
In my opinion the #1 lifestyle factor is what we eat. And as a nation this is where we are the most out of balance. The typical American diet is very high in animal protein which is very acidic and messes with the PH of the body leading to inflammation and disease...not to mention weight gain and obesity and all the killer diseases associated with these health problems.
The closer we can get to foods that have not been processed (plant foods)...the healthier our internal environment (our ponds) will be, which will reflect itself as health and vitality.
Sure, we need to exercise and adjust all the other health factors...but if factor #1 is not adjusted, we are setting the stage for an unhealthy pond and all the strange life forms (sickness and disease) that go along with it. There are no drugs and medications that can substitute for an unhealthy context. All these do is make it more unhealthy.
The best resource I know of for healthy nutrition and weight loss is www.drmcdougall.com. Dr. John McDougall is a medical doctor in Santa Rosa, CA.
Most Sickness, disease, medications, and surgeries can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle...and it all starts at the dinner table.
Dr. Eben Davis is clinic director of Executive Express Chiropractic in downtown San Francisco. To schedule an appointment call 415-392-2225.

Thanks for a terrific article! I've heard it before, but the pond analogy made everything click. I'm more committed now than ever before to change my eating habits. Thanks again.
