San Francisco Carpal Tunnel Doctor Comments:
We have been helping patients with carpal tunnel symptoms in downtown San Francisco for 18 years now.
Here is a list of the most common signs & symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS):
- Hand pain (one or both hands)
- Numbness and Tingling in the hands
- Weakness of grip (one or both hands)
- Night pain (in the hand)
- Forearm pain
- Neck, shoulder, & arm pain
- Pain that radiates from the wrist into the arm
- Loss of finger coordination
- Muscle wasting in the hands
But get this...The same signs and symptoms can be the result of pressure on the nerves in the neck as they branch off the spinal cord (before they travel down the arm and into the hand).
So how do you know if you have carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or nerve pressure (pinched nerve in the neck) in the neck (misalignments, stenosis, subluxations, herniated disc, bulging disc)?
You get checked by a doctor that spends a majority of their day helping patients with similar symptoms like we do at Executive Express Chiropractic at the Embarcadero Center.
I can't tell you how many times we have found that the primary cause of long standing CTS symptoms was actually the neck...not the hand. Yet the treatment was all directed at the hand. So make sure you go to a carpal tunnel expert. It can save you a lot of time and aggravation.
It's not uncommon for a chronic hand pain patient that has a long standing primary nerve crush site in the neck to start feeling better right away once we initiate treatment. Even with severe cases.
In fact...true carpal tunnel syndrome is rare...and it's one of the most mis-diagnosed conditions I have ever seen.
So...I guess the moral of the story is that if you have CTS symptoms and you are not responding to treatments...and your doctor has not considered pinched nerves in the neck...you should get a second opinion from an expert. If you live in San Francisco you can see us. Otherwise, do some research online or ask around to find a chiropractor, orthopedic doctor, osteopath, or physical therapist that treats CTS day in and day out. Because not all doctors do.

So it's really on the neck 'coz when I first read a CTS article it actually focused on hand nerve problem that's why I'm so scared knowing that my job requires using the mouse and keyboard everyday and to calculate - at least 10,000 clicks a day. Amazing!
